A colleague was running a VM that had an ISO file mounted from an SMB share that was running fine until it sufddenly powered off. vmware.log shows the following error block repeated ad nauseum until the log got truncated

How do I answer the question to make it stop retrying?
Yes I changed the CD drive to the host device, which is an empty drive, still no starty. The same thing happened earlier yesterday with another similar VM. There may be a problem with the ISO image file, but I'm curious about how to recover the VM when this happens
There should be a vmware.log in the same folder on your esx host as your vm. That should, hopefully, have more info as to the nature of the problem. Attach that log to a post and we can help troubleshoot.
