Unable to Change Compatibility Mode

I am attempting to change a physical RDM to virtual RDM compatibility mode. The option to change it is grayed out and the vm is shutdown.

Any suggestions.

The correct way is to detach it and than re-attach it again. Read here more details http://communities.vmware.com/thread/102246

I found that post as well, but was hoping there is a solution that doesn't require deleting the disk, losing data, and restoring from backups.
