Storage not showing up properly.

Have a Fiber Channel AX150 hooked to ESX 3.5 server, Have a LUN of 2.9TB. set up, and when It shows up in the VIC under the Storage adapters it shows the 2.9TB. However, when I go to add it, it says that there is a capacity of 2.9TB but avalible is 702 GB, It is a brand new AX150, with a just created LUN 0 and no data has been placed on it yet.

The server has internal HDs, and ISCSI san of 1.7 TB attached and has been working fine. But now needing to add additional storage. Note: Eventually this will be shared between several ESX3.5 servers.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2TB is the maximum size for a VMFS3 volume when not using any extents..

Maximum with extents is 64TB (32x 2TB)

Hi Kltaylor,

you can use bigger VMFS datastores than 2TB. But this only works when you use extents as mentioned above.

But be aware of the risks of using extents before implementing it.

(If possible use lun's with a maximum size of 2TB and avoid using extents.)

Thanks for the info, I'm rebuilding the LUN to the 2TB, but still unclear as to why instead of showing it as a 2.6 TB and avalible 2TB, it showed the avaible as 702GB.

Will let you know how it goes when I get the LUN Rebuilt.

It's binary math vs decimal math.

2.9 TB = 29000000000000 bytes

Decimal Math = 2900 GB

Binary Math = 27008.354663848876953125 GB

So, you saw the amount over the 2 TB because of the 2 TB limit.

Make sure during the format process that your block size is 8MB and not 1MB.
