Snapshot and Clone options are grey out???

Hi,

We have VMware 3.5 infrastructure runs on several ESX hosts.

Today I planned to clone one of the Windows Guest VMs (v2v). When I did right click on the guest Vm, I found Snapshot, Clone, Clone to Template options were greyed out. The rest of options such as migrate are available.

I tried to do the same thing on different VM Guests on the same ESX host and all the options were available including Clone.

Anybody knows what might goes wrong with this particular Guest VM (Windows 2003 Server Standard).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

Does your VM use RDM's ? You cannot snapshot a VM when it has RDM in physical compatibility mode.

Hi Martin,

No ... This VM doesn't use RDM (Raw Disk Mapping).

One thing I don't understand the other servers who have same functionality with this VM do not have this issue. The Clone option is available.

The original idea is I want to run V2V for this particular VM.

Thanks.

After looking to the setting on this VM, I realized that the disk was configured to be persistent. And this VM uses VM version: 3 and the rest of VMs use version 4. The setting interface a bit different.

I assumed this was created or migrated before from previous VM version.

Thanks Martin for pointing to that direction.
