Server 2.0 migration to ESX 3.0.1-Do I need tools installed??

Very new to VMware am kind of stuck. I am trying to get a server 2.0 built virtual machine installed into ESX 3.0 running in Infrastucture 3 and the machine will not shgow up on the netwrok despite correct network settings. It looks as though the network cards are not being recognized. Do I need tools installed on the machine I am trying to migrate or is ther some setting I am missing on my ESX server??

Thread moved to ESX 3.0 forum.

Does the VM have network adapter(s) in it's settings?

Yes, bridged e1000.

SO this was a VM that was orginally built on vmware server 2.0?

You can import the vm to ESX using the convertor tool.... etc..

if you have done this, and do not see any NIC's look in the device manager and if no nics are listed they might be "ghosted"... you could simply shut down the VM and re-add new NIC's (add new hardware etc)...

You should load vmware-tools for obvious reasons, but they are not needed to load the NICS etc.

I would remove it, then readd a new NIC...

I tried that. They are automatically set to e1000. All the other NICs say 'Flexible' but I am not able to add that type of NIC.

Thanks a lot for responding!!!!

How do you have your vSwitch/ Network setup? - is e1000 the name of the Network?

When you right click the VM is there an option to upgrade the Virtual Hardware. You usually see this when the VM is off... I believe. If the option is there you may need to do that. This is needed when migrating a VM from ESX 2.x to 3.X

Does this still apply if we have migrated to ESX from Server 2.0?

E1000 is the name of the network card that shows up on the virtual appliance I am trying to migrate. Not sure what you mean by 'How I have my vSwitch/nework setup'.

Did you remove the nic from the OS or the VM itself (i.e. Edit Vm Properties)?

I belive the VM itself. How exactly would I go about removing it from the OS?

Is the vm windows? If that’s the case - open the device manager, and right click the NIC and select "uninstall"

Linux. Both Host and virtual machine.

Is the host a Vmware-Server Install? I thought you said this was ESX3? Or were you just referring to Vmware ESX as "linux?"

So you virtualized the hypervisor?

Hardware > linux > "insert hpyervisor here"> vm-esx > vm-guest ? am I reading your response correct?
