Sell full licensing or OEM

Hi folks,

The OEM Vmware ESX Enterprise offered by Dell , HP , etc do not permit upgrades to new Vmware versions and only updates in the release ?

Is it a good reason to buy a full license from Vmware resellers (Gold subscription, for example ) instead of OEM from IBM, Dell, HP ?

Thanks in advance .

I don't believe you are correct. If you purchase support then you are eligible for upgrades as long as your support contract is current.

If you buy support from HP, you need to call HP for support instead of VMware. That may take more time to get issues resolved. Or it may be faster for HP related issues.

Hi There

We buy all of our VMware and support from HP. You are entitled to full upgrades as long as you have current support. There is no "special" version it is just that HP can help with problems that may be HP hardware related.

If they are not hardware related then then jump it into L2/L3 support of VMware.

Is this different than 2.x to VI3? I have Platinum support and had to pay for the upgrade?

Hi MattG

You should have got it or free. From memory we had the v2.5.x Advanced and all we did was pay for an uplift upgrade to Enterprise because our maintenance was current.

Right. With the ESX 3.x release here's what prices did:

ESX 2.x VIN -> ESX 3.x Enterprise = $1k (early promo)

ESX 2.x Std. -> ESX 3.x Ent = $3750

ESX 2.x Std. -> ESX 3.x Std = Free.

So you only pay for features, not licenses. If you just want the latest version with the same features it's free as long as your support is current.
