I was wondering why the manual install install tells me I can not have a host name that starts with a numeric value and yet if I install from the scripted install it will allow a name like 2901xxxx and the server will run and join VC and generally work with a name like that .
Am I setting myself up for other problems down the road?
P.S. this isn't my naming convention
I would avoid number names - you can check it with:
"ping 12345" and see what happens.
It isn't an all numeric name so that isn't going to be an issue. It is just that the manual install doesn't allow you to have a numeric character as the first character of the hostname. Could this be an issue somewhere else.
MS doesn't like such names too - but I see many dns name with leading numbers therefore think that should be not an issue.

3.5. Preferred name syntax
The labels must follow the rules for ARPANET host names. They must
start with a letter, end with a letter or digit, and have as interior
characters only letters, digits, and hyphen. There are also some
restrictions on the length. Labels must be 63 characters or less.
This could be the answer.

Thank you...glad to see somebody reads those RFC's ;).
That is something I can take to the client.
I also found that this RFC has a general recommendation against it:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1178
It also makes an interesting read, did you know you shouldn't use names like 'moron' or 'twit'? LOL
Yeah found that too. Wikipedia links to it
