I don't have anything to do with this site, but I've used the vmbk solution in the past and it's a fantastic tool.
Now it seems Massimiliano Daneri has moved his focus to patching ESX.

Wow that looks awesome! Will give this a try tomorrow.
p.s. Champion at last! Congrats Stu. ![]()
Cheers mate, I get this gold cup thing for pointing out other peoples achievements and gaining some kind of reflected glory. ![]()
It does look good though, like you I'll be testing tomorrow.
Nice, fill it full of beer and chug it down ![]()
Caught this release on virtualization.info tonight. I'll definitely be checking this out in the lab this week.
We've seen a few great things come from VMTS, and this looks to be another, but I will admit that I'm a little hesitant to use it for the production environment in one of its initial releases. As the author explains, it is his first stab at writing .NET applications. It will get some bench testing hopefully this week.
I'm curious how it handles the bundled rollup patches.
Also notes tiny web server required. Does that mean it comes with a "tiny web server", or do I need to supply IIS or Apache? We're already using IIS as the current patch repository. I wouldn't mind getting rid of it.
Lastly, it looks like bugs and feature requests for this product specifically should be shared at: http://www.vmts.net/snitz/default.asp?CAT_ID=7

No doubt MR T is brilliant, but to clarify, this is not his work. Re-read his first sentence.
Anyone have any reviews on vmtspatchmanager?
I'm testing it now.
+ It looks good, intuitive and professional
+ The downloading of the patches works like a charm (even thru a proxy).
+ Using an integrated Web server for the distribtion of the patches to the ESX server is a great idea.
+ Next to each patch is a small description. Great if you only want the minimum patches for your config.
+ Able to handle patches for ESX 3.0 and 3.0.1
\- No obvious prior information that Putty and WinSCP are required. Wish the program would come with it's on installation of the OpenSSH for Windows programs (ssh and scp).
\- I'm confused by the multiple authentication request for the root account & password when I enter the settings tab. Why does it require twice the entries.
\- Also confused by what the Trusted check boxes means, but I'm too lazy to RTFineM.
\- During the installation of the patches on a ESX 3.0.1 server, I had the Install Status window crash a few times. You can continue or quit, yet in the ESX tab at the bottom of the GUI, I can see that my updates are progressing.
hello all,
i have tested it on a NEW 3.01 installation and everything works fine. at first i cerated a repository and downloaded all packages i needed. after this i marked all and installed the whole bunch of patches.
2 of this patches wouldn't applied. the first is the 2066306 and the second the 6075798. the background changed to light orange.
the first critical would be spared with the message "DOWNGRADE" and the installed field is checked. the second gives me the install checkbox and the patchname and severity are light orange and the rest is darker grey.
when i try to install it manualy the log tells that i package is need for downgrade. i thing this is the other package 2066306.
when i look on my other esx boxes i can see that ALL patches are applied.
\- what is happened? is that a problem with the way how the patches would be applied?
\- does i have a problem and is my system not correct patched?
greetings from germany
jeff
I have to say that software looks really impressive. It even integrates with VirtualCenter. How sweet is that?
I'll definitely have to try this out on sometime soon.
Looks very promising, please make the ssh port configurable for non-standard port #'s.
hello all,
i have a special problem:
at the vmware website i can see a release date 15.05 etc. at the patchmanager i found different dates like 09.04.
what kind of dates are the vmts dates? the patch building dates?
thanks
jeff
i am having an issue getting this configured at all... it do you have to have a specific service or protocol configured...? No proxy, ssh/remote ssh conf and patches are downloading. I just can't get it to connect to my three ESX hosts.....
Getting these errors too... System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at vmts.patchmanager.formMain.getWebServiceUpdate()
Any special steps, web server, using IP or host name? The installation process seemed to be straight forward.
Please help!

Hi guys,
I've just published a new build I hope this one can solve your issues.
SSH port setting for each ESX
VCenter HTTPS/HTTP chooses with the port number
Authentication now is rewritten, you have to choose Login Settings for each server before connect the first time (if you use the default authentication it's no true)
Fix proxy authentication (I hope) please feedback
Minor interface fix
One note about date, inside VPM you see the real patch publish data, it's different from VMware web site published data.
If you prefer I can change it.
Putty and WinSCP are not required
thx to everyone for support.
Massimiliano Daneri
Slam dunk! However i am getting the downgrade errors much like jmcclymont a few threads up!
I just downloaded the latest version and can't seem to get it to run. I installed it on a W2K3 Sp2 VM. After I ran the install the configuration options come up. I ran the configuration but now the application doesn't start. I get a prompt for the VC server name and then a user name/password. The system goes to high CPU utilization (100%) and then nothing.
Any suggestions?
Bill S.
