Moving existing VC database to VC server with new name

Hi, we're looking to move an existing Virtual Center database over to a new server with a different name. Both VC and the database live on the same server. My plan was to do the following:

  • Old server: VMVC1

  • New server: VMVC

  1. Install SQL on to the new server VMVC

  2. Backup the VC database from VMVC1 / restore to the new server VMVC

  3. Install Virtual Center on VMVC pointing to the database.

Is this likely to work? What is the best way to accomlish this?

Thanks

No reply, so went ahead and tried it and it worked. Had to reconnect ESX nodes as they were being managed by the old server, but other than that, it was pain free.

just out of curiousity.. is there a link to the recommended way to back up a virtual center server? I just realized that I don't think I have my VC database backing up. Is it just a standard sql dump? Will that capture all my configs?

Just do a normal SQL backup of the database, that contains all your configs - at least as far as virtual center is concerned.
