I am trying to set up ESX 3.01 on the following box
CPU Intel dual core 2 1.86 ghz
Memory 2G ddr2 pc4200
Board ECS pt 890t-a
Video pci express geoforce 6200 le
Hard drive sata samsung sp1213c
I can boot to my simple laptop but when I boot the desktop I get this error code
ff 50 10 58 eb d3 90 55 57 56 53 8b 74 24 14 89 f1 c1 e1 04
Kernel Panic: Fatal Error
Any one know what could be the problem?
Thanks
ESX doesn't support SATA.
If you really want to use a White Box system with SATA make sure you use one of the working SATA RAID controllers.
Thanks
OK so what about IDE (no raid) and what about my laptop (little emachine) has no problem to boot to the cd yet this desktop with more power get to the fatal error?
You can install ESX on IDE but you can't create a VMFS volume on IDE - therefore you won't be able to run VMs.
Another problem could be the motherboard / chipset.
I do have a pci raid card for IDE but I guess that wont be good either?
Motherboard chipset?
I am still amused that my little laptop boots just fine. Emachine M622-UK8X
There's a reason for the HCLs.
If you really want to run ESX on a White Box I suggest searching for white box in the forum.
So the code above is relates to the chipset?
Thanks , I was just trying to install (first time user for study) on this box since it was on my hand.
Of course HCL.
but I am still amazed by the laptop
And I presume that USB keyboard and Mouse was not the problem.
Or Bios settings.
I don't know where this code relates to - I'm not a VMware engineer.
USB keyboards and mice usually don't lead to problems like this.
When (during the boot process) do you get the error?
after floppy drive and video detection

something about not tainted

Hello,
If you post the full panic we can better determine the cause of the problem. Kernel's will panic on install for memory, cpu, and PCI reasons. After installation, it could be CPU, memory, storage, or PCI reasons. Not much difference there.
The small traceback will help quite a bit more on determining the cause. At the moment it is a guess on which it will be. To test your memory, which you should do before installing any version of ESX use memtest86 (www.memtest86.org).
Best regards,
Edward
