I thnk we cant upgrade with Zero downtime..this is so because we have to upgrade database too from VMFS 2 to VMFS 3.

Also all version of ESX 2.5.X is not supported for upgrade.

So follow the steps below to upgrade ESX 2.5 to 3.X.

ESX updrade steps:

1. Before upgrading an ESX Server host, back up the service console and the local VMFS2

file system, including the following:

The /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files

a Custom scripts

b .vmx files

c Local images: templates, exported virtual machines, and .iso files

2. Virtual Machine Backup

Before beginning an upgrade, back up virtual machines by one of the following

methods:

a. Back up virtual machine files , Back up your virtual machine files, including the

.vmdk or .dsk and .vmx files. The .vmdk or .dsk files are located on your

VMFS2 partitions. The .vmx files are stored with the service console.

Then put the installtion CD and select upgrade and follow the simple steps.

after installation completes..upgrade the database from Vmfs-2 to Vmfs -3 under configuration tab of esx under storage adapter option.

Sometimes we required to runthe Vmware Running the Pre-Upgrade Script..for mounting the files.

But i suppose this much exercise upgrade to ESX 3.5

Hi

Different methods is awailable. But none of them will offer zero downtime.

You need at least to restart every guest after Vmtools installation and Virtual hardware upgrade.

See more in these guides->
