How to boot windows VM from existing SAN Disk.

Hi,

I am trying to use a Windows VM as a DR server for a physical box.

The physical machine boots from SAN.

I have created the VM using RDM pointing to the SAN disk. The VM boots into windows but then Blue screens.

I was told at a recent training event that this would work and that the hypervisor would look after the drivers etc for the VM.

Is this possable or must I use P2V?

Many Thanks,

D

Hi,

The problem is due to the SCSI drivers for the physical machine. When you try booting the VM off the RDM the SCSI drivers will be unknown. You have a couple of options:

  1. Install the VMware SCSI drivers on the physical server in preparation for the failover
  2. Run a program like FixVM-SCSI with WINPE to change the SCSI driver once the RDM has been presented to the VM

Kind regards,

Glen
