When i logined on a esx server, how can i identified the servier type is a ThinESX or VMvisor.

It's confused me these days.

Is there some indicate string for server type in system box?

If you can login using SSH then it's full fat ESX.

In the VI Client the version information is printed above the tabs.

In addition - at the command line vmware -v can also be used to display the ESX server version and patch level.

Actually,

ThinESX and VMvisor provide the remote login method via ssh protocol.

The Information which on the tab of VI Client is not clear for me, It's just info this is a 'VMware ESX Server 3i, <version>,<buildnum>. I exact want to know this is a ThinESX or VMvisor.

The prefer way is to get the indicate string or message from system directly.

Could you please help me to do this?

  1. vmware -v

Well,

3i means the sleek ESX is installed.

The thin ESX servers, as mentioned, have an i appended to the name, for example ESX 3i 3.5.0, that means it is the thin version of the esx 3.5.0 server. The thick servers will not include the 'i' , for example:

VMware ESX Server 3.5.0 build-77234

VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 build-75615

My problem is how to identify the server is a THinESX or VMviosr.

I am compared the messages on VIclien, they are all display ESX 3i 3.5.0.

I know how to idientify a server is ESX server 3.5 or ESX 3i.

Thanks.

Is it only me that's confused what exactly "ThinESX" and "VMvisor" are? Never heard of them myself! Do you mean installable 3i vs USB stick 3i???

I myself have been trying to figure out another way to say what has already been said. I think at this point, I'm scratching my head at the same thing.

As far as I know VMvisor is just an unofficial name, used on the boot screen of at least the early releases. Note sure about ThinESX, where are you seeing this.

you are right.

ThinESX is installable 3i without service console

VMvisor is USB bootable without server console
