Are you running the VI client on Vista? Does it work if you run it from an XP machine? There are known issues with running the VI client on Vista and this is the usual error message.

I see this error message as well; on XP machines. My Vista machine actually has no problem.

We started seeing this after the Patch 2 upgrade. My users see this when they try to power up a virtual machine. It is odd because they can power on the machine just fine via the web interface which seems to rule out a permissions issue but then I try on their machine with the VI client and startup the virtual machine just fine. I am thinking about opening a support call on this one.

What VI client build version are you running - should be 40644? Depending on patch level of the

esx servers they can be behind the version from the VC server.

Have you tried putting :902 on the end of you connection string in the VI client?

I started getting this error message as well this morning. I have the most current build of the VIC and VMware VirtualCenter Management Server (build 40644).

I installed VMware Server over the weekend.

I have my suspicions that this could be coming from the VMware Server install. I've had compatibility problems between the two in the past.

I have the same situation. Power up works in the web client, but not in the vi client.
