Error when trying to resize a hard drive

Does anyone know how I can extend this disk? I am trying to go from 6GB to 10GB. My command prompt is at the directory with the VMDK file and I ran this command.

vmkfstools -X 10G filename.vmdk

Here is the errror:

Failed to extend disk : The called function cannot be performed on partial chains. Please open the parent virtual disk. (5)

Hello.

Do you have any snapshots on the this disk? If so, you will need to resolve those before the expansion.

Yes that is the procedure I followed and the VM was offline. I've resized the VMDK files a bunch of times. This one is just erroring out for some reason.

It has been sitting at 95 percent for a few minutes. Is that normal?

yes, that is normal. Also, if it even times out, that is normal as well. Give it sometime. Depending on how big the snapshots were, it could take sometime. You can check your snapshot manager periodically and if there are none there, then you can tell the process is complete.

I am getting this error.

msg.hbacommon.outofspace: There is no more space for the log of servername-00005.vmdk. You may be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant partition and clicking retry. Otherwise click arbor to terminate the session. The machine is doing this on boot. When I click retry I get the same question again. I can't get the machine up. What should I do?

have a look at this KB

If you are truly out of space on your LUN, that is a problem. I wouldn't use extents, but instead start cold migrating VM's off the LUNS to other datastores that have space.

It shows 15GB free in that datastore. Should I try to free up more space?

In my opinion you should keep around 15 - 20% free space on all your LUNs. So, if you truly have 15GB of free space on your LUN than I would try to free up more.

Also, check the ESX Host to see if what your VCMS is reporting is actually true. At the service console type vdf -h , this will give you a listing of all your disks, which includes local and shared.

The fdf -h command didn't work from the console. What am I doing wrong?
