ESX installation - VI3i 3.5 Installable or VI3 3.5 ?

Hello.

I am wondering what will be best for my environment, using the installable VI3i v3.5 or VI3 v3.5 ?

Perhaps there is no difference, or maybe it is.

I hope that someone can point me in the right direction or maybe have som input to my discusion.

Here's a link to the docs describing this:

http://vmware.com/support/pubs/vi_pubs.html

VI3i is the embedded version of the installables, that will run from a CF card/usb stick, or native to the hardware that certian manufacturers put out. If you are buying new Dell or HP hardware ask your sales rep about it. Otherwise you are going 3.5. There shouldn't be much noticable difference operationally between the two.

If your server has local disks use VI 3.5.

VI3.5i is for systems such as Blade servers with no local storage. (Note you may still need network storage for Logs, etc...)

Hi,

The first question to ask yourself is if your hardware is on the 3i HCL, if not, use 3.5. The version 3i is the future architecture for VMware and required less systems resources but you have to know that some features like HA are experimental on this version.

This is true for system deliver with the 3i OEM chip but if you use the installable version you still required local disk (and yes us can user boot from SAN but...)
