I just installed ESX Server 3.5 . At the end after I clicked the "Finish" button and the system rebooted,
it displayed the following:
mounting root failed. Dropping into basic maintenance shell.
...
...
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off.
Any idea or suggestion as to what the problem might be or what is causing it? How can I fix this problem?
Thanks,
al8
If this is a whitebox using a SATA controller look at the process here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3.5/SATA_mounting_root_failed.html. If it is a supported server take a look at this KB article - kb.vmware.com/kb/1003448.
Rebuild
If you downloaded the ISO check the disk.
This problem might be caused by incompatible storage controller. Eg. some kind of SATA raid controllers. What server and raid controller are you using?

At the beginning of the installation, I clicked the "check" the disk option.
It did not give me any error messages. Disk seems to be okay.

The error usually has to do with the fact that the installer can recognize the disk controller, but the vmkernel can not when you boot ESX after the install. What sort of server and controller are you using?
I am installing it on Supermicro server. By the way, changing the SATA Controller option in the BIOS to Enhanced from Compatible fixed the problem.

It seems like your upgrade ESX 3.5 the storage controller drivers are not compatible and cause your disk systems not to mount here's the solution how to fix it.
