ESX 3.5 Update 1 ISO installation - Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type.

Newbie here. First time ever ESX installation. Booted off the ESX CD, got past the keyboard and language questions (whew!), selected Local CDRom as the media source, then got the apparently infamous msg "Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type". I assume this means it cannot read the CDRom drive any more (it is a brand new DVD +/-RW Toshiba 71, I think). What to do to get past this error message? Thanks, John

Are you running the Setup on supported Hardware? Otherwise ESX Server might not have the necessary drivers for the installation on this hardware.

What sort of hardware are you using? The below might be helpful. Do you get a screen about choosing which install media to use (CD / http / ftp / etc)? If so you could try http or ftp. Just copy the files and folders from the install CD to the ftp/http server and then select the appropriate option.

CD_ROM - No drivers found http://communities.vmware.com/message/875606

I happen to be having the same problem. I think the user having the issue may have left out a very critical detail. the error message occurs just after the screen "Installation Method” where you answer the question "what type of media contains the packages to be installed" Options are "Local CD-ROM, Hard Drive, NFS, FTP, HTTP" When you select "Local CD-ROM" it says "No Drivers Found" however if you continue to read it says " Unable to find any devices for this installation type". ive done some research on Linux distros and there’s tons of people having the issue and all seem to b able to resolve it by specifying something like "linux all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf " something or other... it basically makes the installer use a generic IDE mode for the CD-ROM, this only happens when the CD-rom is a "SATA" cd rom... dunno why or how... im going to keep looking till I figure it out.. Or maybe I’ll just do the FTP thing... That’s not a bad idea... just wish I could ensure it actually see's the drives before I go through all that trouble.

Can either of you perhaps tell me if the complaint about "No driver found. Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type." referring to the CDRom drive or the hard drive? Thanks,

Probably the CD-ROM, but it doesn't gaurantee that the storage controller has been detected. What are you trying to install this on?

If this is the case, how to provide ESX the drivers it needs?

ESX uses in part modified Linux drivers so you would have to get drivers from them. It's not a simple matter of downloading drivers from the CD-ROM vender to make this work. You might have to go with an alternative install method (http/ ftp ). You could also try installing ESXi. It uses a different install method.

Just curious but is this server for production? I don't see it on the supported servers list and it's a good idea to stick with it for production.

T605 should have SAS 6iR or PERC 6i. Both should be supported in 3.5 U1 (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_io_guide.pdf). So the ESX installation should see the controller. Have you configured the RAID volumes by using <ctl+R>?

Do load via GUI, what does the GUI show in anaconda? Does it see the Storage Controller at all? And not see any valid DASD connected to it? If so, DASD not see, but sees the controller. Shutdown the system, recreate the RAID set, and explicitly intitialize it, full initialize. This will make sure the geometry configuration is valid. I have see once or twice on Dell servers, where for some odd reason anaconda gets confused and can not see the DASD behind the controller. The only way I have been able to resolve it is to recreate the RAID set, as noted above.

If the GUI does not see the storage controller, then anaconda is failing to query the hardware correctly. In one case, I had this issue, and by removing the controller (was PCI card type) and reseating it, I was able to resolve the problem. But in your case i think yours is integrated? Don't have the T series specs at hand.
