ESX 3.0.1 to 3.5 Upgrade

Please bear with my ignorance - I don't take the time I'd like to learn all the nuances of ESX server. I have one ESX 3.0.1 server, local storage, that will be upgraded to 3.5. Not running VC. I've read several posts that a clean install is the preferred method. If I want to retain the current configuration, what folders/files would need to be backed up or copied off? I reviewed the upgrade guide: which states on page 17 "Before upgrading an ESX Server host, back up the service console and the local VMFS2 file system" but it isn't clear how to do so.

I do understand the many benefits of VC, however, have not purchased the license yet. Ultimately we will implement a 2nd ESX and VC using SAN storage. I can't wait!

I'm highly impressed with the caliber of users of this site and the volume of information that is available - I most always find the answer I'm looking for.

I would very much appreciate some guidance.....

Thanks!

If I only had the one host and was at least at 3.0.1 like you are, I'd opt to do an upgrade myself. If you boot your host from the 3.5 CD it should ask do you want to upgrade or install. Your partitions for VMFS would already be VMFS3. The only thing you might consider is making copies of your *.vmdk files if you have another location you can store them.
