I'm hitting the extreme frustration level. I have ESX 3.0.1 installed in a 4 host cluster, all installed on a linux platform. Virtual Center is installed on Windows 2003 Server. Everything works ok, but I can not get connected to the VMware Management Interface. I've tried http:// and https:// with ports 8222 and 8333. It won't come up on a XP workstation (this is all on the Intranet, no proxies or firewalls involved), and it won't even come up using the Virtual Center machine using IE to connect to the ESX Host.
The regular User Interface comes up fine... it I type http://ESXhostname. but not the Management Interface.
Any ideas... The documentation acts like this should just happen and it should respond... but it doesn't.
Hello,
FOr ESX v3. There is no MUI, just what you see. To configure the HOST you need to download and install the VIrtual Infrastructure Client (VIC) or use the command line. Using your browser connect to http://esxhostname
On that screen is the download for the VIC. Download and install then connect it to the ESX server.
Best regards,
Edward
you need to install the VI Client either from the download link on the web page you browse to via http://esxservername or from the Virtual Centre installation media. once installed you will need to connect either to the ESX host (if standalone) or to the Virtual Centre server, from the client you can go on and configure your servers.
Then how do I manage my datastores... such as a datastore that I have that includes ISO files for Guest installs? That was apparently included in the Management Interface... but doesn't seem to be included in the VI Client, or the browser based User Interface.
"Then how do I manage my datastores... such as a datastore that I have that includes ISO files for Guest installs?"
You can "browse" your datastore by selecting one of your ESX host server on the left side of the VI client, then select the Summary tab on the top in the right pane. In the middle of the VI client you will now see your Datastore and all the volumes listed. Double click on them and now you should be able to browse and delete items inside them.
My preferred method for dealing with the ISO images is use a free program called WinSCP. It has a kind of Norton Commander or WSFTP feel to it with a split screen. This will allow you to access both your VMFS and EXT3 file systems.

I understand that... I can browse and delete items... but I was wanted to add files, and even potentially to move some VM files around...
I ended up just FTP'ing to the host.
There's no way to add files to a datastore via the VC console. You'll have to use WinSCP or FastSCP, which are SSH tunneled FTP applications, to move data on your datastores around.
