ESX 2.5.3 -> 3.0.2 migration (dmotion) The upgrade has failed...

Hello,

As part of upgrading and moving (using vmotion) from the old 2.5.3 server to one server already upgraded we got the following message:

"A general system error occured: The upgrade has failed. Please power-off the virtual machine and complete the migration"

We guess the reason for this might be that we did "mgmt-vmware restart" while on the receiving machine while the vmotion (dmotion) was running?

However: We would like some advice how to proceed...

The virtual machine is still running.

Dmotion-scsi0: files exist on the vmfs3 filesystems. The original files are untouched on the vmfs2 filesystem.

We guess this means the esx3-server reads from the original files and writes a redo-log in the dmotion-scsi0:* files?

How should we proceed? Shut down the virtual server as soon as possible and then do what?

Please help.

Answering my own message.

The first thing we did since the machine was up and running was a complete backup.

Then we used vmware converter to make a "clone" of the machine (choose "import physical machine") Took almost 24 hours though...

However it seems all our precautions was unnessesary since when we turned off the machine a new choice was availible "complete migration". This worked.

But, better be safe than sorry. Leaving this here as advice for others.
