Do I need to purchase VirtualCenter to use ESX Server?

No, you don't need to use VirtualCenter, but it enables most of the higher-level features (most importantly, VMotion) and allows a single point of management for all of the ESX servers in your environment.

There are other benefits, but these are the two biggest advantages of using VirtualCenter.

Need to purchase? No. If you only have a few hosts, or running VMware starter edition, I wouldn't.

If you have many hosts, or want to use the HA/DRS features, then definately yes.
