Do I have a License Issue?

I am just about to introduce a fourth ESX 3.0.1 host into our vmware cluster. All other hosts are licensed for HA, DRS etc using a licence server.

I have updated the licence file to include the latest host. Problem is when I log onto the new server directly using the Virtual Client I do not see the option to select HA, DRS etc, only Consolidated Backup.

So my question is, do I have a problem with my licence (looks ok on website) or once the server is added to a HA cluster the option will appear?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

DRS and HA are licensed through\with VC so you won't see those options unless you have pointed your VI client at your VC server where your host is registered and manage it there.

Hi,

I have pointed the licence server setting to the same server as all the others, it's just it's not part of the same cluster.

My licence file is correct:

License Count

VC Management Server 1

VMotion 10

VC_ESXHOST 10

VC_DAS 10

DRS 10

PROD_ESX_FULL 10

ESX_FULL_BACKUP 10

Right. No questions there.

The issue, as I read it, is that you are pointing your VI client directly to the ESX server and expecting to see license info about HA and DRS; you won't. You will only see this when you point your VI client at your Virtual Center server and then navigate within VC to your host and check licensing there. You will never see info about DRS and HA licensing connecting directly to your ESX host; they are manage through VC.

Sorry if my previous post was not clear.

Perfect, that's what I wanted confirmed. I just wanted to avoid coming into work tonight to do the change then find out I can't configure HA due to a licence issue.

Thanks again.
