Copy the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files from your ESX server to the machine you are going to use as the mapping server

I am trying to setup an NFS share on my windows server so that I can do vMotion. I have 2 ESX servers that will be accessing this storage location so that I can vMotion the contents on one ESX server to the other ESX server. I have come across many discussion boards that say I have to "Copy the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files from your ESX server to the machine you are going to use as the mapping server"......How do I copy those files on my ESX server??

I am VERY VERY new to VMware and will need step by step instructions on how to do this.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi,

Try this and this

http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/it-consultant/configuring-nfs-in-windows/

To copy the files across I would use WINSCP which a gui based secure copy app which should make it easy to copy the file to the Windows box

Regards

how to do access the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files to copy them? I setup WinSCP on my windows server where I will be creating the datastore but I don't know how to connect to the ESX box to copy those files. Do I need to make them available first by using the "export" command on the ESX box????

Please help!!!!!

launch WinSCP, you will get a window after original launch. Under Host, type in the IP Address or FQDN of your ESX Host. Underneath there you will see a username and password field, enter the credentials. When you connect, on the right hand side you will see the ESX directory structure, and on the left window your desktop directory structure. Browse the directory structure on the left and drag and drop the files onto you desktop window on the left.

Hope this helps

Do I need to open a port on the ESX box? When I do what you stated above, I get "access denied". I am using "root" as the username and I know the password I am entering is correct.

thanks much!!!

You will need to allow root access via SSH to be able to use WinSCP. here is a KB that explains one way to do it

You can also use the VI client to grant the root user access. Go to user and groups. Find the root user. Right click on the user and selet Edit. Check the box that says Grant shell access.
