Conversion of DG Unix Box... Assistance Required!

Hi There All...

We have a DG Unix box on site (Aviion) which whilst no longer used day-to-day, is required for some 5-6 years to come. To try and reduce running/maintenance costs, we thought it would be a good idea to virtualise it but have a couple of questions...

1. How?!! I think i'm right in saying that VMWare's convertor will only do Window's based machines (it certainly didn't work when I tried to connect to the machine's IP with "root"!), is there a similar tool we can use to import it into our ESX environment?

2. The Aviion is 6 x Processor machine, is it still the case that we will need to import onto hardware that has at least 6 cores?

Any advice/assistance greatly appreciated. Alternatively, we would consider paying a consultant to come in and assist with the migration if there is anyone out there who could help!

Regards,

Kelvin Papp

Firstly, is this an intel box, most older unix boxes were sparc processors.

There is a boot CD you can use to boot your old box from (if the bios supports booting from CD!) this will then boot a linux OS from the CD rom and you will then be able to P2V the machine.

If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points for "Correct" or "Helpful". Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forums,

DG Unix runs on either Eclipse MV and later AViiON architectures neither of which are i386. VMware can only virtualise i386 architecture so unforutunately you are going to be out of luck with Converting this machine.
