Clone/Convert to template... not available in menu?

Hello,

we have 2 floating VMWare ESX 3.5 licenses and run 2 R3 servers which we access through VI-client.

I would like to create a template from a Win2003 VM I've just created -

as described in http://searchvmware.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid179_gci1320419,00.html

Unfortunately I don't see any templates related entries in the menu.

Do I miss some component or should I switch some options on?

Best regards

A. Farber

You need Virtual Center for this.

Thank you, actually I've learnt to use VMWare ESX + VI client in the past few months, but I'm still confused by the many products VMWare offers.

Do you think I need to purchase a separate license for it?

Is it a program to be installed on a client PC, like I do for VI client or is it something to be run on a separate server?

Thanks

Alex

And I wonder what would be the checklist for a "poor man's templates"?

Copy all VM files, edit the .vmx file?

Yes, you need an additional license for Virtual Center and you also need a SQL server.

However, there's still the "poor man's" version available.

You can clone the VM's disk(s) (using vmkfstools) and when you want to "deploy" a new VM from that "template" you can clone these disk(s) to a new VM.

Then you'll need to adjust the network settings, SID and the like.

When using Windows VM's I'd simply sysprep the VM before creating the master images.

Template is nothing but files which have VM files along with the configuration file vmtx.
