Cannot power a virtual machine within a virtual machine

I have successfully setup and configured ESX3.5 to run under VM 6 WS but it appears that when I add a VM using the VI client to the ESX host I encounter the following error;

"you may not power on a virtual machine within a virtual machine"

I am sure there must be something to work around this as I am aware that others have gotten VMs to work under ESX 3.5 under VM WS 6.0. If there isnt then there wouldn't be any point for xtravirt to even document and acknowledge this procedure for testing an ESX environment.

Any help would be appreciated

TIA,

This is a KNOWN limitation in for ESX 3.5 under Workstation 6.0. You can download latest Workstation 6.5 beta and run it without any problems. Please visit www.xtravirt.com site how to deploy ESX 3.5 with WS 6.5 beta.

I am still having the same issue with WS version 6.5. Although the machine goes to 95% upon powering on, it still states that

"you cannot power on a virtual machine in a virtual machine"

Something not configured properly?

Thanks,

Are you trying to create a black hole? Smiley Happy

For the record, I have never been able to get this scenario to work. If someone has, I'd love to hear how it was done.

Did you follow the white paper located here: http://knowledge.xtravirt.com/white-papers/esx-3x.html

Also are you using the 6.5 build they recommend or the release candidate?

As an FYI I was just able to get this to work with the above whitepaper and the latest build of Workstation 6.5. Pretty cool. I'm going to play a little with it tonight to see if it will run in Fusion... doubtful but who knows.

Works on Fusion. I copied the machine I created on the 6.5 beta side over to my MacBook Pro. Was able to run the VM under Fusion 2.0. Pretty neat.

JBSengineer,

What build is that if you do not mind me asking. I think that I downloaded the 6.5 RC from VMware site.

Do you have any docs about the Fusion build as well.

I am assuming I do not have to recreate the ESX box on the WS 6.5, nor the IET for iscsi. I just removed my older WS 6.0 and replaced with 6.5?

Thanks,

aikora

aikora,

It was the RC posted under the beta section for 6.5.

No docs on fusion. I simply copied the ESX machine from my 6.5 workstation into my MBP. Followed by just powering it up inside fusion. Make sure to rename the virtual machine folder with a .vmwarevm extension so Fusion will recognize it as a VM.

I'm not sure about having to recreate the ESX box. I'm sure you could find out quick by playing around with it. Good luck

I am still unable to get this to work....I have downloaded both version of VM 6.5 and still the same error messages I will start to look at the vmx config file.

Are you following the white paper correctly? Also does your machine have the Intel-VT extensions and dual-core?

Hi JBSeng,

Yes I have followed the previous whitepaper. I am certain If things were wrong with areas such as Intel VT, which I do have I would not have been able to come as far as building the esx hosts.

Thanks,
