Hi, I am looking at the following server for esxi 3.5 u4. Its listed as supported system.
Model | Transport TA26 (B2932-E) |
Manufacturer | Tyan Computer |
CPU Model | |
CPU Series | Quad-core AMD Opteron 238x series |
Form Factor | Rackmount |
Stepping | C2 |
Number of Sockets | 2 |
Number Of Cores | 4 |
Max Memory (GB) | 64 |
My questions:
What is support policy for CPU serie?
Will it support "AMD Opteron 2380" which of same series at that of "Quad-core AMD Opteron 2384"?
Thanks,
As long as the CPUs are in the same series, which yours seem to be(23xx series), they will be VMotion compatible. And, as I stated before, if you are using at least Update 2, you can use EVC to insure that they are compatible, by setting the EVC for AMD processors.
Just noticed that you were asking if you could use the 2380 instead of the 2384. That shouldn't be a problem.

Hi please help!!
Your question is a bit confusing, but if you are asking whether or not ESX will support the Opteron 2384 as well as 2380(is this th dual core?), then yes. With no additional configuration changes, as long as processors are in the same series, i.e share the same archieecture, then they will work without issue. Also, since update 2, they have bundled in EVC, which allows disimilar series cpus to run in the same cluster, and retain full DRS/VMotion compatability.

Jon, Thanks, yes my question is on the similar lines, the system I mentioned has AMD Opteron <![endif]><![if gte mso 9]>
<![endif]>2384 as CPU listed in the supported configuratio in HCL and I wanted to know, can I use <![if gte mso 9]><![endif]><![if gte mso 9]>
<![endif]>2380 instead as its the same series as that of <![if gte mso 9]><![endif]><![if gte mso 9]><![endif]><![if gte mso 9]>
<![endif]>2384 and AMD Opteron <![if gte mso 9]><![endif]><![if gte mso 9]>2380 are Quad Core the only difference is in frequecy.
