Backing up ESX 3.0.x before upgrade to 3.0.2 Update 1

Hi,

We are going to upgrade several ESX servers to ESX 3.0.2 Update 1, some are now running 3.0.2 and also 3.0.1.

Was wondering beside backing up guests ( done trough Vranger ), what other backup ( config or else ) should be done on the ESX boxes...

What is the norm or best practices for this kind of operation...

Thanks ...

You have a couple of options. The first is to run a Linux backup agent within the ESX service console.

Or, you can backup the relevant configuration files in the /etc directory.

Lastly, and most common, is to simply re-install ESX in the of any issues (usually, this is the quickest method particularly if you are installing ESX via a scripted installation).

Here is a link to a white paper that goes through the various options:

you could save the /etc directory just in case if you want.
