VI3.5 to Vsphere 5

Please could someone tell me if I am able to do the whats new in Vsphere 5 after attending the VI3.5 couse but not actually doing the certification exam for 3.5

My plan was to do whats new in Version 5 ans then do the exam

No, your only option to qualify for VCP5 is to attend either the Install Configure Manage or Fast Track course for vSphere 5, see here: http://www.vmware.com/go/vcp

To get into VCP5 ,I will recommend you to join the fast track course for vSphere 5
