Hi All,
I am planning to take the VCP 4.1 exam before attending the mandatory classroom training. This is because my training is scheduled next month, and I already have hands on experience with vSphere, and like to save some time by giving the exam upfront.
Does VMWare allow/recognise this approach.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Techpot
Hi Techpot, yes VMware do allow you to do that. I assume you have been studying using the exam blueprint and official documentation for vSphere 4? You will be asked some very specific questions in the exam, I have lots of VCP4 links and information on my blog -
Best of luck
Scott.

Which course are you doing? If it's the vSphere ICM course, and you've already got VCP4-level knowledge and may have even passed the exam before your course, I would recommend that you consider taking the vSphere Troubleshooting course instead. The ICM course could be fairly straightforward for you, whereas the Troubleshooting course should teach you a lot of new things and still qualifies you for gaining the VCP4 certification.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for responding.
I'm planning to attend VMware -vSphere Install Configure Manage V4.1 (5 Days - classroom training) next month. Hope this training meets the VCP requirements.
Regards,
If you think you're already skilled up to VCP4-level, I would definitely consider the 4-day Troubleshooting course instead - being totally honest if you are at the level you say you are you won't learn a massive amount doing the ICM course... But yes, the ICM course does qualify you for the certification.

I have so far gone through following materials:
Mastering VMware vSphere 4 (Paperback) by Scott Lowe
Vsphere CBT by Davis Davis
Various Online VMWare documentation
Solved sample questions from http://www.simonlong.co.uk/blog/vcp-vsphere-4-practice-exam/
However, as I have not yet attended the official course, I don't have the course material and have not read it.
Hope it is not mandatory to study the official course material for giving the exam before the training?
Thanks,
Techpot
I would definitely recommend downloading the exam blueprint asap, and studying for the items in the blueprint using the official vSphere documentation - you'll find links to both on my blog. Go to and click on the "VCP Study" tab
I'm also still recommending that you consider switching to the Troubleshooting course instead of attending Install Configure Manage, to me it depends on whether you feel that you can learn a lot on the ICM (probably not if you're ready to pass your VCP exam already) or you want the formal training and/or best practices on the ICM material.

Scott, thank you very much for your suggestions.
Regards,
This is the way I will be going, I intend to sit the exam and then do the course later when I have time. If the exam is based on the course / courses then passing the exam will show I understand the course .. sounds like a riddle but its my quickest way for future employers to see I have the knowledge to do the role.
