i have currently vcp-dcv 6 (not 6.5) and want to update to vcp-dcv 2021. do i really have to attend one of the required training courses mentioned in the certification path or is it enough to take the exam ?

As per the "VCP6-DCV or older" path on the VCP-DCV page, training is "required" (rather than "recommended") - therefore a mandatory step.
