VCDX4 Certification

With the results of the VCAP-DCD beta exams, there are the first VCDX4 people.

Actually the only way to be VCDX4 is upgrade from VCDX3, but seems that soon will be open also the first VCDX4 defense. When? I think that about two-three months are required to send VCDX4 application invitation (I supoose that nobody has receive it yet) and fix a deadline at least one month before the defense.

So good luck for everybody that is involved in the VCDX4 path!

2 items...

got my results from the DCD exam beta, so i moved up to VCDX 4.  I am sure many others are in this situation too, now that the DCD beta exams results have been sent to those who have took it....

VCDX 4 from scratch for folks....Partner Exchange is right around the corner, so I am sure there are some folks who will be defending for VCDX 3 who will get VCDX 3 and 4 after this defense.

Wonder how many people are waiting to pass the new VCAP4-DCD exam so they can submit their design to VMware so they can be offered a seat for a defense at the next event(s).

There are people that have taken and passed the regular VCAP4-DCD and are waiting for the VCDX4.

How many I don't know, but at least more than three.

I would be one of those wanting to progress to the next stage, so hopefully some more information will come out in due course as to what the next actions will be including what sort of timescales we would be looking at.

I got this far waiting on the results for the exams Smiley Wink -- What's another few months!

Don't wait the invitation, and start with your design.

Usually you have only few weeks to send the entire application, so start collecting material and write down.

You can also see the current application form (it is available online), but I suppose that it will change for VCDX4.

I'm also one who has passed both exams and am waiting for the next step. I have already started my design.

Question: once both exams are all over and done with, will VMware 'automatically' send an invitation to submit a design (or something), or is there something I need to do to prompt that? I did register for the VCDX process before the vSphere vesion was released, but decided to wait.

I have a copy of the application form, but was under the impression that it was sent in as part of the design submission, after being invited to submit a design.

Am I mistaked?

Thanks

For VCDX3 was in this way. I suppose it will be same also for VCDX4.

But when you see that defenses are scheduled and you do not receive nothing, try also to send and email to vcdx@vmware.com.

I have a copy of the application form, but was under the impression that it was sent in as part of the design submission, after being invited to submit a design.

The application on-line is the same that will be send.

But the current application is for VCDX3, maybe it could change for VCDX4.

So you it to understand the design requirements, and start from the design documents.

good read Andre Smiley Happy - in terms of a sample design template I'm guessing VMW are protecting their intellectual property ( ie the design kit which is part of the partner portal & not generally available to the public. ) As usefull as it would be to see an example of an acceptable design I can't see one being published.

The lack of a official template or at least a schema of the design is a problem.

But I think that it also a part of the design itself Smiley Happy

Maybe the VCDX4 blueprint will cover this? No idea on what will be put on it.

PS: Chris Colotti has publish a new post with some useful hints

My first submission for defense was for VCDX3. It was rejected. It was a completely fictional project as I am a Storage TSE with VMware GSS. I built the environment purposely small with 6 large hosts to handle ~30 VM's, a single Tier1 array and then BC/DR to a remote site 2/3's the size. While my design was quite nice, where I really went wrong was in two places. I didn't justify any of my decisions. While I followed best practices for the most part I didn't explain why my network cables were plugged in where they were, I didn't explain why my fabric was laid out as it was.

Almost as important to my lack of justification was my lack of logical/conceptual design. I did draw out a number of logical drawings in my submissions but nowhere in there did I make mention of users/groups/sla's etc in my design.

I think if people have written the DCD and have paid attention to the scenarios where the business case is put forth and you have to base your answer on that, you can determine the type of pre-amble they are looking for in the design.

I am using the Design Workshop book to base my revised submission on. Chapter 2 goes through a section of investigation and planning the entire design that I think after all I have been through is really going to be a requirement to get the submission accepted. When I first drew up my submission I was going for technical excellence only. When I had some of my peers read through it and be impressed I felt that would have been enough. Now I understand that it's not just putting together a bullet proof design, it's explaining why every decision you make is the right one.

If you read the application form for the VCDX4 you will see that they mention the average submission is between 100-300 pages. My original design was 60 pages and then I stole some of our canned documents for my supporting stuff (install/test/manage/etc) which from what I could tell didn't work out for me too well. Even though I modified them to fit my design, I don't think my reviewer was impressed with my decision to do that. So for the people that feel access to the partner/PSO design packages is putting them a step ahead or a step behind for the people who don't have access don't feel that this is a make or break thing. In my experience it was part of the break thing.

Good luck to everyone who is building a submission for defense. I will try to answer as many questions as possible if people have them but keep in mind I am pretty much in the same boat as you guys.

cd.
