vSphere Update Manager 4.1 - 32-bit DSN for Oracle 11g

Trying to install vSphere Update Manager 4.1, but it fails with the following message:

"Setup failed to connect to the database. Please make sure that you entered the correct Data Source Name, username, and password"

This is on Windows Server 2008 (64-bit). Per the admin guide, I have a 32-bit DSN configured and testing successfully to the Oracle 11g database for Update Manager. I used the most recent Oracle InstantClient with the 32-bit ODBC drivers.

Any thoughts?

Not sure if this applies to you, but we actually ran into an Oracle bug that affects both Oracle 10g and 11g with the Instant Client. This provided a similar error message and was resolved by applying an Oracle patch on the instant client DLLs.

Take a look at the following: VMware SR 1587634091 & Oracle PR 9793452 for the resolution paths which sounds like it may apply to you.

Thanks for the response! I was able to move forward by installing the full Oracle 11g 32-bit client, rather than just the Instant client. I did not have access to the Oracle patch so I never did test it.

Hi:

We needed to install Oracle client 32 bit in our w2008 r2 64 bit to be able to install VMware Update Manager. Finally we did it using Oracle instant client 10.2.0.5. The installation is a bit tricky because you need to download Instant client basic version + instant client ODBC version. Merge files from both versions into a single folder and follow the instructions that appear in the instant client ODBC version folder. Basically it says that you have to define the environment variable PATH with the folder where you have the instant client and a variable called TSN_ADMIN which points to the location of your file tsnames.ora. We didn't have to install the full client. Hope this helps someone.
