cant enable update manager plugin

Just upgraded each host to ESX 3.5 and now in the VIC I am trying to enable the update manager but getting the following error:

The VMware Update Manager cannot accept requests now because VirtualCenter server cannot be reached, or the database cannot be reached, or it is in the of stopping.

We've restarted the management console for the hosts and restarted the services. What else can be done to get this enabled. THanks

have you tried to restart both the vCenter Server service as well as the VUM service

They have both been restarted. The server itself was restarted as well.

I looked at the kb and followed it and i still cannot enable it. The location was setup correctly, and the DSN is already there.

I'm going to bump this because I have the same problem (or similar, anyway) when I click the enabled box.

I checked out the KB article. Looking in my vxi-integrity.xml file I see:

<vpxdLocation>https://$VPXD_LOCATION:$VPXD_PORT/</vpxdLocation>

I don't know if I'm supposed to change that or not, since it's using variables, and I don't see them defined anywhere.

The update service is indeed running.

Opening up the ODBC administrator, the only "System DSN" that's showing is:

Name: VMware VirtualCenter

Driver: SQL Native Client

I'm assuming that's the default for the virtual center. This is all being done locally on the Virtual Center server. I even rebooted.

Should there be a second one specifically for update manager?

I'm using Virtual Center 2.5.0 Update manager client is 1.0u3, and am runing ESX 3.5u3

What to do from here?

Thanks

-Mike

My issue is now fixed, ended up reinstalling the Update Manger on VirtualCenter (I had called vmware).

Why does yours have variables? Try using the server name instead; <vpxdLocation>https://VC_SERVER</vpxdLocation> without using the variables, then restart the services. Or you may need to call VMWare and open a ticket and have them walk you through it.
