When will 64 bit Windows 7 and Server 2008, 2008 R2 be supported by Update Manager?

We are starting to move into a 64 bit OS environment within our Infrastructure but have noticed that our Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 guests are not able to remediate.

We receive the error: "Failed to scan or remediate because of unsupported or unknown OS.

I am experiencing the same problem and also want to know when these two OS's are going to be supported by Update Manager. I've deployed 2 Win 7 and 29 2008 R2's. Those numbers will only increase.

I also need to know this.

Part of the proposal for my users for Virtualizing their environment was to go to 2008 R2 and Update Manager would automatically take snapshots before patching. Now i have egg on my face because even though R2 is supported as a client it is not supported in Update Manager.

Come on VMware, 2008 R2 has been out almost a whole year now (August 2009).

A lot of shops are skipping the 2008 R1 (server 'Vista') and going straight to R2 as are we.

This is really needed and VMware needs to at least say when they will have it.

Not to mention they should already have it.

Hi,

According to compatibility matrix, VUM 4.1 can't be used to patch Win 2008 R2 and Win 7:

(page 17-18)

Thanks.

Yes, we know that.

What we are interested in is:

A) Is this ever goibg to be supported?

B) In which timeframe?

C) Why does it take more than a Year after RTM of 7 / 2008 R2 to get this functioanlity?

Thanks & Cheers

Michel

Judging by this related post, never: Update Manager not going to support patching guest o/s?

Update Manager 4.1 Feature and Support Notice

Update Manager 4.1 and its subsequent update releases are the last releases of the product to support scanning and remediation of patches for Windows and Linux guest operating systems and applications running inside a virtual machine. (A list of such operating systems and applications is available in the section Scanning and Remediation of Virtual Machines and Applications.) This capability will be discontinued in the next major release. If you use this capability today, you should start planning your transition.

Looks like VMware is getting out of the guest OS remediation business. It's a shame.
