VMware vCenter Update Manager had an unknown error. Check the Tasks and Events tab and log files for details.

When doing a patch or upgrade that need a reboot via update center on a host, I get the following error:

vim.fault.noHost

The vCenter uses different ports for https and http (4443, 480) than the default (since there is a small test web server on this physical server). Theses ports where added in the firewall config and show in text mode but not in the configuration security profile ?

I have done

esxcfg-firewall -o 4443,tcp,out,UpdateManager

esxcfg-firewall -o 480,tcp,out,UpdateManagerWeb

and the results that I only see at the end of the esxfg-firewall -q and not in the upper section:

Incoming and outgoing ports blocked by default.

Enabled services: CIMSLP ntpClient VCB CIMHttpsServer sshClient vpxHeartbeats updateManager CIMHttpServer esxupdate swISCSIClient sshServer webAccess

Opened ports:

UpdateManager : port 4443 tcp.out

UpdateManagerWeb : port 480 tcp.out

Added Iprules:

The log don't show anything relevant ?

Any clue ?

it's being a while and no one has responded. i would advise creating a support request with vmware support if you have.

hello. I have clean installation of ESX 4.1 done and also got the same error. Looking forward for fix, thanks

I found the solution for that problem.

If you have any invalid, inaccessible or orphaned VMs (like me) in the inventory, you should unregister those virtual machines and try again with update in Update Manager.

Perfect! That was the remedy to the problem. I had one orphaned server. I removed it. And the upgrade went right through.
