'VMware Update Manager had a failure' Error Message

Hi all,

I am getting the error message 'VMware Update Manager had a failure' when I go to perform a 'Scan for Updates' task on an ESX server in the Virtual Infrastructure Client.

The version details of the ESX Server is 3.5.9, 6477 and the VMware Update Manager Client is 1.0.0.63959.

The following is from the VUM log file (see at the bottom of this message) - which indicates (unless I've missed something) that the error message is to do with ""Task execution has failed: UpdateUid: ESX350-200808408-BG invalid scan status: 4 without prerequisite."

I have created and attached a baseline to the ESX server and have also performed a VUM update. I have also checked and can confirm that the relevant firewall ports are also open in ESX as recommended in other Forum postings for similar VUM errors.

Any assistance much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Hello,

I had a similar problem. If you run the SCAN and look at the CLI process list you may find gpg is going defunct. Not sure why that would happen, but the fix was to run esxupdate by hand from the SC.

esxupdate -d http://VUMServer/vci/hostupdates/hostupdate/esx-3.5.0 scan

Replace scan with update when you want to update.

Hi Edward,

Thanks for the reply.

I took your advice and ran the command 'esxupdate -d http://VUMServer/vci/hostupdates/hostupdate/esx-3.5.0 scan' though unfortuantely it failed. I double checked, what I think is the path to the update library which I found was located in 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate\esx\esx-3.5.0'. This differs a little from the path you gave so am not sure if I'm using a different version of VUM that may store it's library in a new, albeit minor, location.

I tried the command again using what I think the path, in my instance, should be: 'esxupdate -d http://VUMServer/vci/hostupdates/hostupdate/ esx/esx-3.5.0 scan' and it worked. I could see all the available updates in the library!

I then proceeded to run the command again but this time using the 'update' switch. Unfotununately this time I received the following messages (Please note: the following is just a sample - the rest of the content gave the same error(s)). If I'm not mistaken it is saying that my ESX server doesn't require any of the patches available - which I find suprising as it is quite an old build and no patches have ever been applied.

Attempt a scan again from Virtualcenter. Then post the end portion of the /var/log/vmware/esxupdate.log file located on the service console.

Not running VMware converter on same VC as update manager?

Usually "update manager had a failure" means that your ESX server cannot communicate with update manager due to routing or dns issues. However, I don't see that from the logs (though the esxupdate log file is very big). Are other esx servers having this problem?

If all of your servers are having this problem, then you may have corruption in your update manager database or patch repository. The easiest and least painful way to fix that is to do the following:

- uninstall update manager server

- delete the patch repository (default location is c:documents and settings\allusers\application data\vmware\update manager\data)

- Perform a fresh install

- Specify to use an existing database (select yes to reinitialize your database) - warning this will remove all of your baselines; if you have VC installed in the same database as Update Manager it will only delete the Update Manager entries

- Finish the install

- Wait until update signature completes

- Try again

If that still doesn't work, open a ticket with support Smiley Wink

Task execution has failed: UpdateUid: ESX350-200808408-BG invalid scan status: 4 without prerequisite.

What I can see is that you miss the update...408.

Check your vci-integrity.xml file for all configs and then try to download updates. During that you can check the vum log file (vmware-vci-log*.log).

Hello,

I did as dmadden suggested once when I had some data corruption. It fixed the problem for me. THat is the approach I would take.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies so far. I followed dmadden's advise and deinstalled, cleared the library and reinstalled VUM again. This time things looked like they were going much better, as all the patches were downloaded successfully and stored into the library. However once they had finished and I went to perform a scan on a VM to which I'd already attached a baseline I received the original error message again, "VMware Update Manager has a failure' - here is the line in the logs where it looks like it fails:

'SingleHostScanTask.SingleHostScanTask' 2392 ERROR] Task execution has failed: UpdateUid: ESX350-200808408-BG invalid scan status: 4 without prerequisite.'

Any other suggestions or ideas much appreciated.

Thanks,

Simon

Hi all,

Here's a rather delayed update for those who may stumble upon this thread.

I did get it working in the end though by chance more than anything. I had to move the Virtual Center Server onto another machine so I installed a fresh copy and imported the DB from the existing installation. I then re-tried adding the baseline and applying the patches and now for some reason it all works.

I can only think that there was perhaps a slight misconfiguration on the old server- though I have nothing technical or substantial to back this up with.

Thanks to all that originally responded (points assigned). Smiley Wink

Cheers,

Si

I had this issue as well and found that the time/date on my host was incorrect. Changed the time/date and started installing the updates.

Hello,

Moved to Update Manager forum.

I have had issues with databases being corrupted as well. Or it appears to be the db.

To throw in my 2 cents - the problem for us (same helpful error message) was that the host couldn't find the VC/VUM server. Had to add a line to resolv.conf:

search <active-directory-domain>.com

then service network restart
