We recently migrated from a Vcenter 5.5 Windows server to the 6.0 VCSA. On the windows server Update Manager was using a local copy of full installation of MS SQL. I am preparing to install Update Manager 6 on separate Windows servers. We have 30 hosts and 800 vms at our site. Will SQL express suffice for the Update Manager database or will we need to use a full install of SQL server. I've opened a support call with VMware about this but days later I still haven't gotten an answer. Frustrating!
No, according to the limitations of VUM and the SQL Express option, that's only good for 10 hosts and 100 VMs (or somewhere in there), so you'll probably want to go with a full-blown MS SQL option.
