Scany Entity task fails with 'Host cannot download files from VMware vCenter Update Manager patch store.'

Scan Entity task fails with 'Host cannot download files from VMware vCenter Update Manager patch store.'

the ful error is:

Scan Entity Host cannot download files from VMware vCenter Update Manager patch store.

Check the network connectivity and firewall setup, and check esxupdate logs for details.

see attached screens-shot.

i've reviewed several KBs on different forums w/o luck - including:

i've confirmed that both (8084 and 9084) ports are open. SQL connections to dbase are fine. vCenter Server name also resolves fine, do no DNS issues.

the log files in show diff errors:

log filename: vmware-vum-server-92.log 2010-11-06 15:03:03.671 03648 error 'HTTP server'-- Unknown file extension: zip

and

log filename: vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log

Just to be sure, check the firewall settings on the ESX, on Configuration tab > Security Profile. The Update Manager outgoing connection should be checked.

i am assuming the configuration tab is in ref to the Host, correct? if so i can not find a check-box for "Update Manager outgoing connection"

Sorry... I didn't realize this was an ESXi - it does not have outgoing firewall.

Can the ESX reach vCenter server using hostname and fqdn?

sorry, not quite sure how to verify/confirm if the ESXi host can reach the vCenter server using host name and fqdn!

should SSH to the host to try to ping?

we have 3 different hosts. i can repeat the same for each host.

update:

i tried the ping both w/fqdn and ip and all seems well.

Hi,

On ESXi you have to enable the SSH access. Then, you connect to every host and run ping using the FQDN of vCenter.

It's a best practice set the hosts file on every ESXi in order to resolve the FQDN of vCenter in case of a DSN failure.

TY pcerda.

pings using fqdn are working fine w/o me changing any SSH access.
