Installing VUM on Production vCenter Server

Hello,

The person who set up vCenter prior to me taking it over, never installed VUM. I am wanting to install it to ensure my esxi hosts are patched and up to date, but was wanting to know if there was any danger in installing it on the vCenter server when it is already in production?

Thanks.

not necessary if you host in the physical only. you can virtualize it.

Else if you have not such a big environment than you can build locally with vcenter. but make sure the frequency to check and donwload updates should be lower like twice or thrice in 24 hours to avoid any extra workload in vcenter. Else all good. Smiley Wink  Good luck.

Well i never recommend you to use the vcenter server same as update manager server.

Reason behind :

1. Update manager frequently update the server and its repository from internet and fetch the data frequently. which can cause the storage issue on disk and can be a reason for any situation.

2. Update manager communicates to the internet directly and in case you dont want to keep your vcenter directly in touch with internet then you must go with the separate update manager.

3. Also consumption of resources become high due to multiple process for each operation.

Normally these reasons avoid us to make vcenter and update manager in same place.

Here is an best practice guide. https://www.vmware.com/pdf/Perf_UpdateManager40_Best-Practices.pdf

I have read through that document, but in it the recommendations are: "Separate both the Update Manager server and the Update Manager database from the vCenter server and the vCenter database when there are 1000+ virtual machines or 100+ hosts."

Our environment is not nearly that large, we have less than 20 VMs. Also, I do not have another physical host to host VUM on other than a Domain Controller, which I understand is not supported.
