Configure update manager repository

Good morning. Is there a way to configure the update repository so that patches only stay for so long?

Overtime all the patches are taking up quit a lot of space and many of the patches have already been installed and no longer needed.

Thanks

Not really. You can configure the baselines, but removing baselines does not remove the patches. Update Manager by default requests 16GB of storage for this reason. As you adjust baselines you can delete patches or the patch repository to keep down the size.

Hope this helps! === If you find this information useful, please award points for "correct" or "helpful". ===

Is not possible.

You can only configure what patch family you want download: ESX3, ESX4 (in vSphere), Linux, Windows.

But u can change the path

By default the VMWare Update Manager Patch Repository is stored in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMWare\VMWare Update Manager\Data

This location can be changed during the installation of VMWare Update Manager.

Solution:

1) Stop the VMWare Update Manager Service

2) Update the XML file C:\Program Files\VMWare\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml to point to a new location.

a. Update the following entries in the XML file.

i. Under <docRootHostUpdates> change the <path> setting to point to the new location

ii. Change the <patchstore> setting to point to the new location

bq. bq.

3) Move all the existing patches to this new location

4) Start the VMware Update Manager Service

Patch repositories do not work that way. Think about what would happen if you built a new ESX host from scratch in 6months to a year. You will miss alot of patches if they were automatically deleted after a period of time. All patch repositories must be complete, otherwise they are not very usefull for most implementations.

However, you can change the path to a drive with more space. Read the whole article here.

Currently, the total space needed for just the ESX hosts patches is around 7GB, easily managable with a single Hard Drive. If you also do OS updates then that size may be 2-3 times as large.
