Check Notification Error Message ?

Hi,

We are constantly get an error message saying

"Check new notifications vCenterServerName: VMware vCenter Update Manager has restarted. The task was scheduled to run when Update Manager was not available and will run on the next scheduled time.

VMware vCenter Update Manager Check Notification

vCenterServerName

18/09/2010 1:17:01 PM

18/09/2010 1:42:54 PM".

However, most of the time it is OK.

May I ask

1) What the notification for ? Is it a notification to the designated Email address if there is new patches ?

2) Is there any reason it fails ?

Thanks

Check how 'Notification Check Schedule' is configured in vCenter, under Home->Update Manager->Configuration->Notification CHeck Schedule'

Can you search in the logs for failures of VMware vCenter Update Manager service?

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

Do you mean that "To find whether there is 'Update Manager Service Failed' in the task / event ?

I am not able to find log file in "Notification Check Schedule".

Thanks

The task was scheduled to run when Update Manager was not available

Seems that there is a problem with the VUM service.

Can you see the VUM plugin? It works fine?

From time to time, we get "The connection to the Update Manager server times out" message on the VI client. Then the VUM plug-in is lost.

However, we have no idea of what the "The connection to the Update Manager server times out" message means as we are not patching ESX / ESXi Hosts when we get the error message.

Besides, when we get the Notification Error Message, it should mean the VUM service is not running, should we go to "Services" and start up the VUM service manually ?

Thanks

VUM is installed on the the same system of vCenter?

If yes check if you can connect to VUM locally (use vSphere client on localhost into a RDP session to your vCenter).

If it works without issue, then could be a problem with the name or IP used during the installation of VUM.

I have rerun the setup and it seems that the settings are correct.

On the other hand, as the problem is related to a failed VUM service, I will restart that service when we get the "Check Notification" error message.

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

According to VMWare KB1007099, it seems that the problem is due to anti-virus software (though it hasn't mentioned the problem also apply to vCenter Server 4.1).

Thanks
