Are there any VSphere tools to simplify Windows Updates on VMs?

That's my question.  I've read there was something called VUM but that it no longer allows updating guests, only the host.

A long, long time ago VUM indeed supported Windows updates. However, this option has been removed (I assume, that this was done due to the increasing complexity). Anyway, there are other options available, like Microsoft's own WSUS server.
