Security Update (KB4592438) to Windows 10 (2004), all ThinApped applications fail to start

Hi
I installed the December 2020 security update (KB4592438) on Windows 10 (2004) and now all ThinApped virtual applications cannot be launched.

The only workaround seems to be to uninstall KB4592438.
Please let me know if there is another workaround.

I also have this issue and can confirm that removing KB4592438 is the workaround

Thanks for the reply.

It seems that the only way to deal with this is to uninstall it.

I have posted a support request to VMware.
I will provide feedback here if there is any way to fix this.

My colleague has investigated further:

"... this KB doesn’t merely cause Thinapp packages to break. It also entirely breaks Thinapp Packager.

On [my packaging VM], with the KB installed it is impossible to run Thinapp Setup Capture.

Remove the KB, and it works again.

Obviously, this rules out the possibility of a re-package fixing  the issue.

I confirm the same behavior and workaround with our ThinApped application.

Opened SR as well.

Hi !
I contacted Microsoft support and the result was to uninstall KB4592438.
The only answer I could get was to uninstall KB4592438.
This is a 3rd party (vmware) problem and should be handled by the 3rd party (vmware).

I got a reply from VMware support that they are working on it as soon as possible to get it working.
I'll wait a little longer and hope to get a Christmas gift from VMware.

Hello,

in my case, the faulting module was C:\Windows\System32\nt0_dll.dll. Yesterday I successfuly tested bugfix version of ThinApp packager.sent by VMware support. I rebuilt the app using the new bugfix version. App now runs normally on W10 with KB4592438 installed. So, in my case, my problem was solved by VMware Engineering. I really appreciate their super fast response and agility, so they provide me with a new ThinApp version before Christmas.

Hi,

I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to share a link to bugfix version of ThinApp Packager. I've just asked VMware Support and will give information here afterwards.

Thanks for understanding.

As I expected, I'm not allowed to share the bugfix version. Here's the answer from VMware Support (relevant part):

Hello Petr,

The experimental build I sent you, should not be shared with the communities page. Users should only get it, if it was provided to them from VMware support.

The release date of the official build will be very early next year. I can't give out an official release date, as it could be pushed back in case engineering need to add further fixes to it. But it will be released very early in the new year.

The current workaround would be to uninstall the Microsoft update KB4592438, and wait for the official build for a full fix.

By releasing official build the problem would be solved for all you guys. Fingers crossed.
