Package Oracle Client

Hey all.

I have a newbie question about virtualizing an Oracle 9 Client install. We're new to ThinApp and looking at it to help with migrating some old apps to Windows 7.

We have several apps that require the Oracle 9 Client. Is it possible to virtualize the client one time and just have our legacy applications use them? (Instead of using Applink for each app)

Has anyone successfully packaged an Oracle client? If so what steps did you take or issues we should be on the look out for?

Thanks ahead of time.

AppLink would be the best way to accomplish this, why are you trying to avoid it?

Hey ggeldorp. Thanks for replying.

We were hoping it was possible to just virtualize the Oracle client and not some of the older applications that leverage the client since they appeared to work on Windows7. But I'm starting to get the idea there's no way to have the native app touch inside the virtual Oracle "bubble".

Curious if it was possible.

You can, but you have to launch the application from within the virtual environment first. You can include a shortcut to the native application in the package and expose an entry point to that.

We've just gotten ThinApp and are testing with Oracle Client 9.2.0.6 also. After installing the captured software and launching SQL Plus to connect to a datasource we get the following message.

"ERROR:

ORA-12564: TNS:connection refused"

Searching this site (for existing Oracle contributed Application Project Files) and google returned no good results for help. Want to know if anyone seen this connection issue? Also if there a special way Oracle clients should be captured?

Thanks.

See http://ora-12564.ora-code.com for a more detailed description on your posted Oracle error and what to do within Oracle to find the cause of the error...

...and...

These may help shed light on what specific mods need to be made to the ThinApp package to make it a fully self contained and desktop non-specific app.
