Is running multiple version ThinApp's only purpose?

I understand that Apps for newer version of Windows will not be able  to run on older version of Windows even thru ThinApp. But it appears that even Apps for  older version of Windows will not be able to run on newer version of  Windows, will still not able to run on newer version of Windows even  thru ThinApp. Is this assumption correct?

Check out my disappointing experiment with ThinApp on NAV Client: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1753056

It appears that ThinApp is only useful to run multiple  versions of the  same app on Windows provided that these versions are  able to run on that Windows to begin with. Is this assumption correct?

btw, if you need to run multiple version of IE on Windows, there is now a freeware to do this: http://www.my-debugbar.com/wiki/IETester/HomePage

Since we do not virtualize the whole operating system (making application virtualization much more resource efficient than whole OS virtualization) will there never be any guarantees that ThinApp will make a Windows XP only app work on Windows 7. That said, I am on a daily doing just that. Unfortunately is it not always as straightforward as you could hope for. But that is the nature of application dependencies..

I have a long list of Windows XP only applications that we have successfully moved to Windows 7.

This blog post solves surprisingly often the issues:
