Is Local Admin Necessary?

In order to use a ThinApp package, does the end user need to have local admin permissions?  If so, how do people get around this?

Thanks!

Since we have the isolation layer to fool an application demanding local admin rights can you run those applications as a standard user when the application has been virtualized with the help of ThinApp..

In other words, no you do not have to be a local admin in order to run ThinApp packages..

I don't think you have to be local admin to use Thinapp packages. Why do you think they do?

I guess my thoughts were just that you have to be a local admin to install anything, so I wasn't sure how ThinApp played with that.

When you use package, you run package. You don't install package when you use Thinapp package. It is already installed for you, you just execute it on your computer under user environment.

ThinApp is installer free application virtualization.. Everything needed to run a ThinApped application is built into the package it self. No local agent, no infrastructure needed.. Only thing you need is a Windows operating system..

If you intend to deploy your ThinApp applications using MSI technology, and your users lack software installation privileges, you may need to use some sort of deployment methodology to take this in to consideration.  There are a couple of settings in Package.INI as it relates to this subject, but they in and of themselves will not necessarily gaurantee that you will overcome the issue, depending on your environment.  Currently we utilize SCCM as our push mechanism, and the SCCM user account can install the MSI packages.  You may have a different preferred method of application deployment.

Hmmm...I was actually hoping to avoid using other deployment methods and utilizing group policy or something like that.

To clarify, the other replies you have received are correct.  I'm attempting to paint a more complete picture.  The Package.INI settings I referred to in my previous post are:

MSIDefaultInstallAllUsers=1
MSIRequireElevatedPrivileges=1

You may need to adjust these settings according to your requirements, if you decide to utilize MSI.

You could simply stream the apps from a network share, or push them to a folder on the local hard drive.  After that, if you want file type associations for your apps, and you want to place icons in the Start Menu/Desktop, you will need to run thinreg.

Would anyone else care to elaborate?  Have I missed anything?

Ah, okay.  I'm fine with just streaming them from a network share or something along those lines.  I appreciate your help!
