App works on XP, but not Win 7

I'm trying to thinapp a certain application we use. Here's some of the details....If i package it on a Windows XP machine, I can deploy it to Windows XP virtual machines but not Windows 7 64 bit machines.

Since I'm trying to get off of XP, I then created a Windows 7 64 bit package machine, with SP1.....I used this machine to install the application, application works fine, so I know the application can work perfectly fine on Windows 7 x64....I go ahead and package it. I then revert to my clean-os snapshot, and try to run the packaged application on the same machine that I packaged it on and no luck. Windows installer starts to run for some reason and then I get "cannot find the specified file" I have tried to enable the WOW64 parameter, and tried quite a Merged and WriteCopy isolation modes.

Any ideas? I did not try to package it on Windows 7 32bit as I'm not currently using it in my environment

Mike,

I have ThinApp'd Wavereader 4.2 successfully after much troubleshooting, tested on XP and Win 7 (both 32/64).

Can you IM your personal email so that i can send you the entire ThinApp project folder (except bin folder) via dropbox?

All you need is just run the build.bat file that bundles your ThinApp license and creates the bin folder for you.

Mike,

I would still recommend to use XP machine for capturing the application.

Please see this blog post on running XP apps on Win 7

If your application will allow, install it to the root of C:\ during the capture.

For example, if your app typically installs to C:\program files\ , try changing it to c:\myapp (or whatever you like, but I usually try to keep the location name 8 characters or less.)

tried all these suggestions but no luck. The app works if I run it on XP...no other combination works. This will be one of those programs that i cannot virtualize i guess

Can you check if the native app is supported on Win 7 please?

Yes it is.  I have the same program running perfect on my physical desktop, which is win7 64 bit

Here's the thing, if I install the program on a win7 64bit capture machine, I can run the thinapp on that machine as expected. However, if I revert to the clean snapshot, it no longer works. As the thinapp opens, windows installer starts to run. I can't figure out why

Can you provide details about this application (app name, freeware or licensed etc)

Is there any trial available for download?

Hi,

The program is called Wavereader. It is an application that's used for viewing security cameras in different locations.

I'm not sure if its free or not, as it does not require a license. I could upload a zip file of the installation files

wow, you did? That's amazing.

Would it be too much to ask what modifications you had to made? Were there any tools you had to use to figure out the solution? I'm just curious for my own knowledge.

I will IM you my info. My only reservation of running your project is, when we install it, there is a file in the program files, that we modify that points to our access database, which pretty much is just a contact list of locations/ip addresses.

When I was trying to build it, I wasn't modifying that file, just to make sure that wasnt the issue.

I really appreciate your help. I'll PM you now

Lakshman...the thinapp worked great and I was able to start from scratch and build it on my own and have it work perfectly, thanks you your guidance.

Much appreciation and respect for the assist.

Same to everyone else.
