using PCI card thru virtualiztion software

Hi i need advice and hope i am at the right place.

The Problem: using window 7 as the main OS on the worksation we need to use linux on windows by Virualization software for example wmware player or other ... but the linux also needs to work with the PCI card that installed in the workstation. the wmware software enable us to share some HW componets like serial port or usb devices and other but i does not have the option to add My peculiar PCI card (that is PCI CAN Bus card ).

the question is: is it possible to share the PCI (or any other pci cards) using Virualization software like wmware player ? what software ? and how ?

can any one advice me.

Thanks.

Hello.

This is not possible with VMware Player or any of the hosted products. What kind of PCI card are you working with?

Good Luck!

I don't believe this is possible as VMware would have to include drivers in order to virtualise or 'pass-thru' to that hardware.

I agree with iw123, its possible.  i tried t before but i failed.  Never tried it again.  But if you really want to make sure, look for updates about it or better yet contact customer support http://imagicon.info/cat/5-59/1.gif

You can accomplish this with vSphere using a VMware technology called VMDirectPath.   VMDirectPath leverages chipset features to passthrough a PCI device into a VM.   The MB has to support Intel Directed I/O (VT-d) or AMD IOMMU.

Currently this technology hasn't made it into the hosted products yet.  Here's a sample thread of what you can do with vSphere - http://communities.vmware.com/message/1817770#1817770.
